Synopsis

Immigration issues in Salento (South of Italy) as discussed in Naemi, a Lecce-based forum of local and immigrant women for the promotion of intercultural exchange and social integration. Emerging from this enquiry is a variegated picture of the segregation and exploitation many women experience after their arrival in Italy in search of a better life but find their rights denied in an area of the country that itself has a long history of emigration.

Director’s statement:

Voices of Native Italian and Migrant Women began as a personal experiment following my return to the Salento after nine years studying and working in northern Italy where the firsthand experience of being a foreigner in my own country aroused an interest in immigration issues. But I also wanted to reveal the other side of the Salento: after centuries of leading a backwater existence, yet preserving a strong cultural identity, the area has reinvented itself as just one more seaside vacation destination.
